H.H. Sri Paduka Ungku ‘Abdu’l Rahman bin Dato’ Temenggong Sri Maharaja ‘Abdu’l Hamid, Dato’ Temenggong Sri Maharaja, son of Y.M. Sri Paduka Tun ‘Abdu’l Hamid bin Dato’ Temenggong Sri Maharaja Tun ‘Abdu’l Jamal [Engku Daeng Kechil], Dato’ Temenggong Sri Maharaja, by his wife, Y.M. Engku Encik Khamis, daughter of Y.M. Sri Paduka Tun ‘Abdu’l Jamal bin Dato’ Bendahara Paduka Raja Tun Husain, Maharaja Indra Bongsu, of Trengganu, educ. privately. Installed by Sultan Sultan Mahmud Ri’ayat Shah, at Lingga, before 11th March 1807. A staunch supporter of Sultan Husain over the claims of his half-brother, the Dutch candidate, Sultan ‘Abdu’l Rahman of Lingga-Riau. He befriended Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, by whom he was encouraged to settle in Singapore with Sultan Husain, where he was instrumental in arranging the cession of the island to the British on 6th January 1819. Accorded the title of Dato’ Temenggong Sri Maharaja and the style of His Highness, and recognised as “Chief of Singapore” in the treaty of 30th January 1819. Styled Ungku Temenggong ‘Abdu’l Rahman in the subsequent agreement dated 26th June 1819. m. (first) Encik Yah binti Moffar, a lady of Bugis descent. m. (second) Y.M. Encik Engku Raja Wuk binti Raja Sulaiman, younger daughter of Y.M. Encik Engku Raja Sulaiman bin Arung Lingga, by his wife, Y.M. Raja Buntit binti Raja Haji, daughter of Y.M. Paduka Sri Raja Haji bin Raja Chelak. m. (third) A lady from Tanjong Surat. He d. at Teluk Belanga, Singapore, 8th December 1825 (bur. there at the Temenggong Mausoleum, Teluk Belanga Mosque), having had issue, four sons and six daughters:
