Al-Sultan bar al-Sultan, al-Khaqan bar al-Khaqan, Al-Sultan Shahrukh Shah al-Musavi al-Husaini Adamu’llah Zillu’llah Ijlal Daulat wa Sultana, Shahanshah of Persia. b. at Isfahan, Fars, 21st March 1734, eldest son of General H.R.H. Shahzada Reza Quli Mirza, Nai’b us-Sultana, sometime Viceroy of Persia, by his wife, H.R.H. Shahzadi Fatima Sultan Begum, daughter of H.M. Al-Sultan al-‘Adil al-Kamil al-Hadi al-Wathiq al-Sultan bar al-Sultan al-Khaqan bar al-Khaqan Abu’l Muzaffar Abu’l Mansur Shah Sultan Husain Padshah Khan bin Shah Sulaiman al-Musavi al-Husaini al-Safawi Bahadur Khan, Sahib-i-Qiran, Shahanshah of Persia, educ. privately. Spared death and mutilation by Adil Shah during the great purge of the princes, but confined in the Arg at Mashhad in June 1747. Released from imprisonment and proclaimed as Shah, 30th September 1748. Crowned at Mashhad, Khorasan, 1st October 1748. Briefly deposed and blinded by Sayyid Muhammad Husaini, 17th December 1749. Restored by Yusuf ‘Ali Khan Jalayer after just 40 days, 26th January 1750. Enthroned again under the protection of Ahmad Shah Durrani of Afghanistan, at Mashhad, Khorasan, 10th March 1750 (when the districts of Sistan, Bam, Jam, Bakharz, Turbat, Khaf and Turshiz were attached to Aghanistan). Deposed by ‘Aga Muhammad Shah Qajar, 14th May 1796. m. (first) a daughter of his paternal first cousin, Kazim Khan-e Afshar Qiriqlu, by his wife, Gauhar un-nisa, daughter of Muhammad. m. (second) a daughter of Faridun Khan-e Gurj, a Georgian. m. (third) Habiba Sultan Begum (same as one of the preceding?), who was instrumental in engineering the downfall of Sulaiman II Safawi and the restoration of her husband in 1750, in collusion with Yusuf ‘Ali Khan Jalayer. m. (fourth?) Fatima Khanum, a lady from Kandahar. m. (fifth) Siyadat Begum. m. (sixth) Gauhar Gust Khanum, daughter of Guasharan, a humble cowherd. He d. from the effects of having a molten crown placed upon his head by torturers appointed by ‘Aga Muhammad Shah Qajar, at the Citadel of Damghan, after May 1796 (bur. Mashad al-Muqaddas, Tus, Khorasan), having had issue:
  • 1) H.R.H. Shahzada Nasru’llah Mirza. b. at Mashhad, Khorasan, before 30th November 1750, educ. privately. He seized control of Khorasan at the age of 16 years, and was appointed as Wala Ni’amat (Lieutenant of the realm) under his father 1765. Special Envoy to Karim Khan Zand at Shiraz 1767-1768, by whom he secured recognition as effective ruler of the provinces of Khorasan, Semnan and Jam on behalf of his father. He contested power in Mashhad with his brother Nasir, attempting to finance his operations by taking all the gold and silver objects he could seize and taking down the railings around the Shrine of the Imam Reza, 1770. Forced from power in favour of his younger brother in 1775, he went once again to Shiraz, where he lived for seven years under the protection of Karim Khan Zand. He returned to Mashhad in 1782 with the help of Sultan ‘Ali Murad Shah Zand and re-established himself as effective ruler of Khorosan. m. his cousin, a daughter of Kazim Khan-e Afshar Qiriqlu. m. (?) Zainab Khanum, who had one daughter, daughter of H.E. Ashi Khan, the Governor of Turbat-I-Haidari, Khorasan (possibly a reference to H.E. Ishaq Khan Qara’i aka ‘Isa Khan, Governor of Turbat-i-Haidari and Khaf 1801-1816). He d. a near recluse (probably poisoned by imbibing opium of inferior quality), at Mashhad, before 24th October 1786. He may have had an only daughter:
    • a) H.H. Shahzadi Vath-Makhan. b. at Mashhad, Khorasan, ca 1775 (d/o Zainab).
  • 2) General H.R.H. Shahzada Muhammad Nadir Sultan Mirza (full brother of Abbas and Reza Quli) (s/o Fatima?), educ. privately. Contested rule with his elder brother, Nasru’llah Mirza, several times. Often seizing power in Mashhad during his absences. Went into exile in Herat 1782-1786. Returned after his death and formally proclaimed as Heir Apparent with the title of Vali Ahad and appointed as Wala Ni’amat (Lieutenant of the realm) under his father, 1786. Fled again into Durrani territory in Afghanistan following the murder of his father. Returned to Mashhad July 1797 and submitted to Fath ‘Ali Shah Qajar 1798. Governor-General of Khorasan 1767-1768, 1775-1782 and 1798-1802, C-in-C of the Army of Mazandaran, General of Cavalry. Proclaimed himself as al-Sultan Nadir Shah II, established an independent government before 4th May 1802. He removed and melted down the gold Sandouq erected by Nadir Shah over the tomb of the Imam Reza to mint his own coinage, now known as “Naderi” coins. His killing of a sayyidi mullah, whom he mistakenly blamed for surrending the city of Mashhad to the Qajars, enraged the local population, who rose up against him and forced his flight to Chaharan ca 15th December 1803. Captured by Shukrullah Khan Jalilvand and delivered to Prince Muhammad Vali Mirza Qajar. Imprisoned at the Castle and interrogated about his crime, but subsequently sent as a close prisoner to Teheran together with three of his brothers and five sons, the party arriving there 4th February 1804. m. (first) a daughter of ‘Ali Mardan Khan. m. (second) Shahr-i-Banu Begum, widow of Mirza Muhammad Sadiq al-Husayni al-Marashi, and daughter of Mirza Ismail, by his wife, Mehr Sharf Begum, daughter of Mirza Badi. m. (third) at Mashhad, a daughter of a Qajar chief. He was k. on the orders of Fath ‘Ali Shah, after being blinded and severely tortured, his tongue torn from his mouth and his hands severed, at Teheran, before 12th April 1804 (after 31st March 1804), having had issue, several sons and daughters, including:
    • a) H.H. Shahzada Sulaiman Mirza. Blinded on the orders of Fath ‘Ali Shah, 1803.
    • b) H.H. Shahzada Muhammad Mirza. Blinded on the orders of Fath ‘Ali Shah, 1803.
    • c) H.H. Shahzada Tahmasp Mirza. Blinded on the orders of Fath ‘Ali Shah, 1803. He had issue:

    • h) H.H. Shahzada Ismail Mirza. He fled to India from Mashhad with two of his cousins, Ja’afar Mirza and Asadullah Mirza, where they were helped by Sir John Malcolm to settle in Hyderabad Deccan. He had issue, a daughter:
      • i) H.H. Shahzadi Shah Jahan Begum. m. Mir Amir ‘Ali Khan. She had issue, two daughters.
    • i) H.H. Shahzada Hidayatu’llah Mirza. He had issue:

Zill-u’llah Gity Sitan Sikander Sha’n Jam Jah Faridun Far Kisra Shaukat Islam Panah Shari’at Panah Hafiz-i-Mulk-i-‘Azam Sultan Fath ‘Ali Shah, Shahanshah of Persia, by his wife, Begum Jan Khanum, daughter of Haji Sadiq Ghaznavi. She had issue, one son – see Persia (Qajar).
  • 6) H.R.H. Shahzada Reza Quli Mirza (full brother of Abbas and Nadir). Fled to Herat 1796, in advance of the arrival of Agha Muhammad Shah Qajar in Khorasan. Unharmed and released from confinement 1804. Fl at Shiraz July 1811. He had issue, a daughter:
    • a) H.H. Shahzadi ... Khanum, Galin Khanum. m. H.I.H. Shahzada Muhammad Reza Mirza, Iftikhar ul-Mulk (b. 30th April 1797; d. before 23rd March 1871), Governor of Gilan and of Rasht, son of H.I.M. Zill-u’llah Gity Sitan Sikander Sha’n Jam Jah Faridun Far Kisra Shaukat Islam Panah Shari’at Panah Hafiz-i-Mulk-i-‘Azam Sultan Fath ‘Ali Shah, Shahanshah of Persia, by his wife, Maryam Khanum Goraiya, a Georgian. She had issue, one son – see Persia (Qajar).
  • 7) ? H.R.H. Shahzada Reza ‘Ali Mirza (s/o Fatima?). m. Bibi Aishan Khanum [Bibeschi-Khannun], daughter of Mir Muhammad Khan. He had issue, a son and a daughter:
    • a) H.H. Shahzada Ibrahim Mirza.
    • b) H.H. Shahzadi Za-Enam Shah.
  • 8) H.R.H. Shahzada Ibrahim Mirza (full brother of Reza Quli?). He was k. (executed) at Teheran, before 12th April 1804.
  • 9) H.R.H. Shahzada ‘Ali Mirza. Fled to Herat 1796, in advance of the arrival of Agha Muhammad Shah Qajar in Khorasan. Returned to Mashhad with his brother Nadir in 1798, but was captured by the Qajar forces during the early stages of the conquest of Khorasan in 1802.

  • 11) H.R.H. Shahzada Yazdan Baksh Mirza. Given over as a hostage to Ahmad Shah Durrani by his father, 1770. Returned to Mashhad 1778. He had issue:
    • a) A daughter. m. before 1778, H.M. Inayat-i-Ilahi Sultan Timur Shah, Padshah-i-Ghazi, Dur-i-Durran, Shah of Afghanistan (b. at Mashhad, Khorasan, December 1746; d. at Kabul, Afghanistan, 18th May 1793), eldest son of H.M. Sultan Ahmad Shah Bahadur, Padshah-i-Ghazi, Dur-i-Durran, Padshah of Afghanistan – see Afghanistan (Durrani).
  • 12) H.R.H. Shahzada Jalil Mirza. He had issue, a son:

          • (d) H.H. Shahzada Nadir Mirza [Dr Nader Nadershahi] (s/o Khanum Shazdeh). m. Zinat ul-Mulk, from the Amirpashahi family. He had issue, two sons and two daughters:
            • (i) H.H. Shahzada Hisam ud-din [Hesamedeen Shahrokhshahi]. m. (first) ... Khanum, née Ziaee. m. (second) ... Khanum. One of these ladies was named Mansura Khanum [Mansooreh Shahrokhshahi]. He had issue, five sons by his first wife, and one son by his second wife:

Amir ‘Ali Mardan Khan-e Arab-e Zangu’i Shaibani, sometime Governor of Tabas (Vakil-i-Tabas). m. (second) H.E. Amir Muhammad Hasan Khan-e Arab-e Zangu’i [Mir Hasan Khan] (d. before 9th October 1820), Governor of Tabas (Vakil-i-Tabas) 1787-1819, second son of Amir ‘Ali Mardan Khan-e Arab-e Zangu’i Shaibani, sometime Governor of Tabas (Vakil-i-Tabas). She had issue, by both husbands.
  • 3) A daughter. m. Beg Khan. She had issue.
  • 4) H.R.H. Shahzadi Gulrukh Begum (sister of Qahar Quli Mirza).

Nawab Haji Husain Quli Khan-e Qajar [Kuchuk] (b. posthumously before 22nd December 1777; d. before 23rd April 1803), sometime Governor-General of Fars, third son of H.H. Nawab Husain Quli Khan-e Qajar Quyunlu, Jahansuz Shah, sometime Governor of Damghan and Gorgan, by his first wife and cousin Assiya Khanum [H.M. Aga Bajji, Mahd-i ‘Ulya-yi Avval], daughter of daughter of Muhammad Khan-e Qajar Izzuddinlu, of Damghan. m. (second) H.I.H. Shahzada Muhammad ‘Ali Mirza, Daulat Shah, Qavam ul-Khalifa (b. at Nava, Mazandaran, 5th January 1789; d.v.p. at Tak-i-Girra, 4th December 1820), eldest son of H.I.M. Zill-u’llah Gity Sitan Sikander Sha’n Jam Jah Faridun Far Kisra Shaukat Islam Panah Shari’at Panah Hafiz-i-Mulk-i-Azam Sultan Fath Ali Shah, Shahanshah of Persia, by his wife, Ziba Kahar Khanum, of the Tziscarashvili family of Georgia. She had issue, one son by her first husband and two daughters by her second husband – see Persia (Qajar).
  • 10) H.R.H. Shahzadi Shah Zanan Khanum. m. H.I.H. Shahzada Muhammad Quli Mirza, Qawam ul-Mulk, Mulk Ara Thani (b. at Nava, Mazandaran, 26th May 1789; d. at Tehran, before 10th January 1845), sometime Governor-General of Mazandaran, son of H.I.M. Zill-u’llah Gity Sitan Sikander Sha’n Jam Jah Faridun Far Kisra Shaukat Islam Panah Shari’at Panah Hafiz-i-Mulk-i-‘Azam Sultan Fath ‘Ali Shah, Shahanshah of Persia, by his wife, Aisha Khanum, daughter of Muhammad Khan-e Qajar Quyunlu. She had issue, one son b. see Persia (Qajar).

She lived in the house of her brother-in-law Prince Daulatshah before marriage. m. at the home of her brother-in-law, Prince Daulat Shah in Tehran, as his second wife, Amir Ismail Khan-e ‘Arab ‘Amiri (d. at Ardestan, after 4th January 1813, bur. Ordib), Governor of Jandaky and Biyabanak, son of Amir Muhammad Amin Khan-e ‘Arab ‘Amiri, by his wife, a sister of Haji Lutfu’llah Khan Torshizi. She had issue, three sons and one daughter.
  • 13) A daughter. She lived in the house of her brother-in-law Prince Daulatshah before marriage. m. Khwaja Khanjan Khan Bakhtiari Chahar Lang, son of Khwaja Nazar ‘Ali Khan Bakhtiari Chahar Lang, sometime Governor of Mugu’i.
  • 14) H.R.H. Shahzadi Namaa [Mah] Khanum (d/o Siyadat Begum). m. Mirza Muhammad Musa (d. before 17th November 1849), Astrologer Royal (Munajjembashi), Governor of Gilan 1804-1806, Deputy Governor of Yazd 1814-1817, Wazir of Khorasan 1817-1821 and 1829, Governor of Herat 1821-1829, son of Mirza Muhammad Reza Langroodi. She had issue, at least one daughter.
