The Al Bu-Said Dynasty

ORDERS & DECORATIONS

The Order of the Brilliant Star of Zanzibar (Wisam al-Kawkab al-Durri al-Zanzibari): founded by Sultan Sayyid Majid bin Sa‘id in 1865, modified and extended by Sayyid Barghash bin Sa‘id on 22nd December 1875, and modified again by Sayyid Khalifa II bin Harub on 5th August 1918. Thereafter a general reward for meritorious services awarded in five classes (1. First Class – limited to 40 recipients, 2. Second Class – 60 recipients, 3. Third Class – 80 recipients, 4. Fourth Class – 90 recipients, and 5. Fifth Class – 100 recipients). Ladies were admitted to the order in 1956. After the creation of the Order of Independence in 1963, the Brilliant Star was reserved for persons rendering extraordinary service to the Sultan, his heirs and successors and other members of the Royal family. The Order of the Brilliant Star of Zanzibar - First Class (Type II), breast star (L) and sash badge (R)

The Most Illustrious Order of Independence of Zanzibar (Wisam al-Istiqlal): founded by Sultan Sayyid Jamshid bin ‘Abdu’llah on 9th November 1963to commemorate the regaining of national independence, to honour those who contributed towards the attainment of freedom, and to serve in future as the nation’s general reward for meritorious services. Awarded in five classes (1. Commander Grand Crescent, 2. Commander Star, 3. Companion, 4. Officer, and 5. Member). Obsolete 1964.

The Order of the Praisworthy (Wisam al-Hamudieh) - Second Class, neck badge.

The Order of the Praisworthy, or Meritorious (Wisam al-Hamudieh): founded by Sultan Sayyid Hamud bin Muhammad in 1897 as a family order of the Al Bu-Said dynasty. Awarded in four classes. Ranked as the premier order during the period of its existence. Obsolete 1911. 

The Order of of the Exalted (Wisam al-Aliyeh) - Special Class, breast star.

The Order of the Exalted (Wisam al-Aliyeh): founded by Sultan Sayyid 'Ali II bin Hamud 7th June 1905 in celebration of his coming of age and assumption of full ruling powers. Awarded for distinguished and faithful service to the Sultan and conferred in a bejewelled special class (awarded to Heads of State) and four ordinary classes. Attached to the order, a silver medal, equivalent to the fifth class of European orders. Ranked as the third ranking order during the period of its existence. Obsolete 1911.

The Order of of the Exalted (Wisam al-Aliyeh) - Second class, breast star (L) and neck badge ().

The Sultan of Zanzibar's Medal of Merit: instituted by Sultan Sayyid Barghash bin Said in 1875. The medal initially functioned as the fifth class of the Order of the Brilliant Star but was later conferred as a separate decoration. Awarded in a single class, primarily to Zanzibari subjects and foreigners in government employ, in recognition of civil services. An oblong silver and gilt plaque with the reigning Sultan's tugra, worn from a medal ribbon.

The Medal of the Order of Alijeh (L) and the Sultan of Zanzibar's Medal of Merit (R).

The Government of Zanzibar Medal: instituted by Sultan Sayyid Barghash bin Said in 1876 to reward meritorious services to the state by state employees, military and police personnel, district chiefs, etc. Awarded in three classes (1. First Flass in gold, 2. Second Class in silver, and 3. third Class in bronze).

The Government of Zanzibar Gold Medal

 
The Sultan of Zanzibar's Campaign Medal: instituted by Sultan Sayyid Hamad bin Thuwani in 1896. Awarded to officers, non-commissioned officers and men of the Sultan's armed forces. Clasps were awarded for specific battles and campaigns, including Pumwani, Jongeni, Takaungu and Mwele.
