ORDERS AND DECORATIONS

The Order of Muhammad 'Ali (Nishan al-Muhammad 'Ali): founded by Sultan Husain Kamil on 14th April 1915. Awarded in a supreme class (Grand Cordon with Collar), two ordinary classes (1. Grand Cordon and 2. Commander) and two medals (gold and silver). The supreme class being restricted to Heads of State and members of the Egyptian and foreign Royal houses. The Grand Cordon was restricted to fifteen recipients at any one time. They enjoyed the title of Pasha with the style of His Excellency (Hazrat Sahib al-Ma'ali), and were entitled to military salutes when wearing their insignia. The medals were awarded for acts of military gallantry, regardless of rank. Obsolete 1954.

The Collar of Fu'ad I (Qiladat al-Fu'ad al-Awwal): instituted by King Faruk in 1936. Conferred on Heads of State and Government, members of the Egyptian and foreign Royal houses, on Egyptians distinguished by their zeal in the service of the state or King, or foreigners for distinguished services to humanity. Awarded in a single class and restricted to ten recipients at any one time. Recipients were entitled Pasha and enjoyed the style of His Excellency (Hazrat Sahibal-Makam ur-Rafi). Obsolete 1954.

The Order of Ismail (Nishan al-Ismail): founded by Sultan Husain Kamil on 14th April 1915 to reward eminent services to the state. Awarded in four classes (1. Grand Cordon - limited to thirty recipients, 2. Grand Officer - seventy five recipients, 3. Commander - one hundred and fifty recipients, and 4. Officer - three hundred recipients). Obsolete 1954.

The Order of the Nile (Nishan al-Nil ): founded by Sultan Husain Kamil on 14th April 1915 to reward distinguished and meritorious services to the state. Awarded in five classes (1. Grand Cordon - limited to thirty recipients at any one time, 2. Grand Officer - seventy five recipients, 3. Commander - one hundred and fifty recipients, 4. Officer - three hundred recipients, and 5. Knight - unlimited in number). Modified and retained by the republic in 1954.

The Order of the Military Star of Fu'ad I (Nigam al-Askariyal al-Kawkab al-Fu'ad al-Awwal ): founded by King Fu'ad I on 6th December 1919. A military decoration awarded in one class only, to officers of the military forces for services in the face of the enemy, for merit or for distinguished services in the field, and who were mentioned in dispatches. Further services were recognised by the award of a bar. Modified and retained by the republic in late 1953.

The Order of Merit: founded by the Regent on behalf of King Ahmad Fuad in 1953 as a general award for meritorius service. Awarded in five classes (1. Grand Cordon, 2. Grand Officer, 3. Commander, 4. Officer, and 5. Knight). Modified and retained by the republic in late 1953.

The Order of Agriculture (Nishan al-Zira'ah): founded by King Fu'ad I on 21st November 1932 to reward meritorious services in the fields of agriculture and farming. Awarded in three classes (1. Commander, 2. Officer and 3. Knight). Obsolete 1954.

The Order of Agriculture - First class or Commander, neck badge

The Order of Education (or, Culture) (Nishan al-Ma'araf): founded by King Fu'ad I on 21st November 1932 to reward services to education, and distinguished scientific, intellectual and artistic services. Awarded in three classes (1. Commander, 2. Officer and 3. Knight). Partly replaced in 1953. Obsolete 1954.
The Order of Industry and Commerce (Nishan al-Sinaa wa al-Tigara): founded by King Fu'ad I on 21st November 1932 to reward meritorious services in the fields of commerce and industry. Awarded in three classes (1. Commander, 2. Officer, and 3. Knight). Retained and modified by the republic in 1954.

The Order of Education, 3rd class or Knight (L) and the Order of Industry & Commerce, 2nd class or Officer (R).

The Order of Arts and Sciences: founded by the Regent on behalf of King Ahmad Fuad in 1953 to reward services to the arts and for scientific endeavour. Awarded in three classes (1. Commander, 2. Officer, and 3. Knight). Retained and modified by the republic in late 1953.

The Order of the Virtues (Nishan al-Kamal ): founded by Sultan Husain Kamil on 14th April 1915, as an order reserved he Order for only. Awarded in a supreme class (the Decoration of al-Kemal in brilliants) and three ordinary ladies classes (1. First Class or Grand Cordon, 2. Second Class, and 3. Third Class). Modified and retained by the Republic 1954.
