JOHOL

BRIEF HISTORY

The state of Johol is one of the component states of the Negri Sembilan Federation. Originally known as Pasir Besar, it was renamed Luak Johol in 1723. The ruler is one of the four traditional electors of the Yang di-Pertuan of the Negri Sembilan federation.

STYLES AND TITLES:

The ruler: Yang Amat Mulia Dato' Johan Pahlawan Lela Perkasa Setiawan, Undang of Luak Jelebu.

The wife of the ruler: Yang Mulia To' Puan (if not of higher rank).

The Heir Apparent: Dato' Baginda Tan Mas.

RULES OF SUCCESSION:

The Dato' Undang is elected by the great nobles and vassals of the state, form amongst the male descendants of the first ruler, Dato' Putri Siti Awan in the female line. It is usual for the son of the eldest sister of the previous title-holder to succeed.

1723 - 1747 Y.A.M. Dato' Putri Kunung Siti Awan [Setiawan I], 1^st Datuk Undang Luak of Johol (fl). m. the Dato' Johan Pahlawan Lela Perkasa Setiawan.

1747 - 1760 Dato' Rambut Panjang (f), 2^nd Datuk Undang Luak Johol. She d. 1760 (bur. Gelombang).

1760 - 1790 Y.A.M. Dato' Putri Setiawan II (f), 3^rd Datuk Undang Luak Johol. She d. 1790 (bur. Bukit Tengah Tanggai, Johol), having had issue:

1) XXX, who had issue, a daughter:
- a) Siti Ani. m. and had issue, a son:
  - i) Dato' Abu Bakar Gubah [To' Bunchit], 6^th Datuk Undang Luak Johol - see below.

1790 - 1810 Y.A.M. Dato' Rambutan Jantan, 4^th Datuk Undang Luak Johol, niece of Dato' Daim, 1^st Penghulu of Jempol.

1810 - 1820 Y.A.M. Dato' Nuri, 5^th Datuk Undang Luak Johol.

1820 - 1840 Y.A.M. Dato' Abu Bakar Gubah [To' Bunchit], 6^th Datuk Undang Luak Johol, son of Siti Ani, grand-daughter of Dato' Putri Setiawan II.

1840 - 1900 Y.A.M. Dato' Wan Saeto Rubah [Wan Eta], Dato' Johan Pahlawan Lela Perkasa Setiawan, 7^th Datuk Undang Luak Johol. b. 1810. He was k. 1900.

1901 - 1918 Y.A.M. Dato' Wan Omar bin Wan Hassan, 8^th ato' Johan Pahlawan Lela Perkasa Setiawan of Johol. Installed as Dato' Baginda Tan Mas, 1900. Elected and installed at Kampong Tanggai, as the Dato' Johan Pahlawan Lela Perkasa Setiawan, and 9^th Datuk Undang Luak of Johol, 1901. He d. February 1918.

1918 - 1947 Y.A.M. Dato' Kamat bin Haji Sulaiman, 9^th Dato' Johan Pahlawan Lela Perkasa Setiawan of Luak Johol, CBE (c 12.6.1947). b. at Kampung Bukit Istana, Johol, 1880, educ. Malay Sch., Nuri. Installed as Dato' Baginda Tan Mas, 1915. Elected and installed at Kampong Tanggai, as the Dato' Johan Pahlawan Lela Perkasa Setiawan, and 9^th Undang Luak of Johol, March 1918. Rcvd: Silver Jubilee (1935) and Coron. (1937) medals. m. Y.M. To' Puan Tisah binti Chelik. He d. at Mecca, Arabia, 14^th August 1947, having had issue, seven children, including two sons:

1) Muhammad Idris bin Dato' Johan Pahlawan Lela Perkasa Setiawan Kamat, educ. Malay Coll., Kuala Kangsar.
2) Muhammad Said bin Dato' Johan Pahlawan Lela Perkasa Setiawan Kamat, educ. Malay Coll., Kuala Kangsar.

1947 - 1973 Y.A.M. Dato' 'Abdu'l Manap bin Tolok, 10^th Dato' Johan Pahlawan Lela Perkasa Setiawan of Johol. b. at Kampung Rokan, Johol, 1907, educ. Malay Sch., Rokan. Installed as Dato' Baginda Tan Mas , 1941. Elected and installed at Johol as the Dato' Johan Pahlawan Lela Perkasa Setiawan, and 10^th Undang Luak of Johol, October 1947. Rcvd: Coron. medal (1953). m. 1933, Y.M. To' Puan Hajah Siti binti Haji Chanai. He d. at Rokan, Johol, 10^th October 1973 (bur. Masjid Tengah, Kampung Pasit, Johol), having had issue, six children (and forty-one grandchildren).

1973 - 1985 Y.A.M. Dato' Haji 'Abdu'l Majid bin 'Abdu'l Wahid, 11^th Dato' Johan Pahlawan Lela Perkasa Setiawan of Johol. b. at Kampung Tanggai, Johol, 1902, educ. Malay Sch., Nuri. Installed as Dato' Baginda Tan Mas , 3^rd March 1948. Elected and installed at Johol as the 11^th Dato' Johan Pahlawan Lela Perkasa Setiawan, and Undang Luak of Luak Johol, 10^th October 1973. Rcvd: DTNS (24.5.1979), PJK (1973). m. Y.M. To' Puan Hajah Bedah binti Said. He d. at Kampung Tanggai, Johol, 3^rd April 1985 (bur. there), having had issue, six children.

1985 - 1988 Y.A.M. Dato' Haji 'Abdu'l Rahman bin Mat Som [Waris Gemencheh], 12^th Dato' Johan Pahlawan Lela Perkasa Setiawan of Johol. b. at Kampung Tanggai, Johol, 1909, educ. Malay Sch., Nuri and the Madrassa Paya Rumput, Malacca. Installed as Dato' Baginda Tan Mas , 1974. Elected and installed at Johol as the 12^thDato' Johan Pahlawan Lela Perkasa Setiawan, and Undang Luak of Johol, 4^th April 1985. Rcvd: DTNS (1985). m. Y.M. To' Puan Hajah Isam binti Haji Hassan. He d. at Johol, 30^th September 1988, having had issue, eleven children (and fifty-one grandchildren).

1988 - 2007 Y.A.M. Dato' 'Abdu'l bin 'Ali, Dato' Johan Pahlawan Lela Perkasa Setiawan, 13^th Datuk Undang of Luak Johol. b. at Kampung Tanggai, Johol, 14^th January 1923, educ. Nuri Malay Sch., Air Mawang. Taken into forced labour under tha Japanese occupation and sent to work on the Thai-Burma Railway 1942-1945, repatriated to Malays in 1946. Joined the Federal Police Force in Kuala Lumpur 1948, served during the emergency, prom. Corporal 1953. Employed with the Dept. of Lands in Seremban 1957-1863, and the State Electricity Dept. at Port Dickson 1964-1976. Installed as Dato' Baginda Tan Mas, 7^th October 1985. Selected as 13^th Datuk Undang of Luak Johol, 30^th September 1988. Installed at the Istana Besar, Sri Menanti, 24^th November 1988. Rcvd: DTNS (1988). m. June 1945, To' Puan Selamah binti Sichat. He d. at Kampung Betung, Tanggai, 13^th March 2007 (bur. Kampung Tanggai Muslim Cemetery), having had issue, nine sons and three daughters, including a seventh son:

1) Osman. b. 1967.

The Heir Apparent: Dato' Muhammad bin 'Abdu'l Ghani, Dato' Baginda Tan Mas. b. at Kampung Rokan, Johol, 10^th August 1940, educ. Malay Schs., Rokan and Gemencheh; Malay High Sch., Klang; and Siglap, Singapore. Installed as Dato' Baginda Tan Mas, 30^th December 1988. He has issue, seven children.
