1855 - 1862 H.H. Sri Paduka Dato Temenggong Sri Maharaja Daeng Ibrahim ibni al-Marhum Dato Temenggong Sri Maharaja ‘Abdu’l Rahman, Maharaja of Johor. b. on the island of Bulan, in the Riau archipelago, 8th December 1810, fourth son of H.H. Sri Paduka Ungku ‘Abdu’l Rahman bin Dato’ Temenggong Sri Maharaja ‘Abdu’l Hamid, Dato’ Temenggong Sri Maharaja, by his first wife, Encik Yah binti Moffar, a lady of Bugis descent, educ. privately in Singapore. Acted as deputy for his mentally incapacitated elder brother from 1833. Replaced him as Sri Paduka Dato Temenggong Sri Maharaja, and formally recognised and installed as such, at New Harbour, Singapore, 19th August 1841. Presented with the ceremonial Sword of State of the Sultans of Johor in the presence of the Sultan Muhammad ‘Ali Iskandar Shah of Johor, the Sultan of Lingga and Tuanku Ja’afar, by the Governor of the Straits Settlements, at Government House, Singapore, 31st August 1846. Formally installed as hereditary ruler of Johor with the title of Maharaja of Johor, and granted a hereditary salute of 11-guns, 10th March 1855. The whole of peninsular Johor thereby came under his sole control, with the exception of the small district of Kesang-Muar which remained (for the time being) the personal fief of the titular Sultan ‘Ali. He then began the develoment of the modern state of Johor by founding Bandar Tanjung Putri (now the state capital city of Johor Bahru), opening up the country to new settlement and granting lands for the cultivation of plantations, encouraged trade and began the building of infrastructure. He had earlier been closely involved with the British authorities in suppressing piracy in the waters around Singapore and the Riau islands. The pacification of the region enabled commerce to flourish as never before, securing for Singapore its status as the premier trading port in South-East Asia within a few short years. m.
