1757 - 1790 H.M. Sultan Al-'Alawi Sidi Muhammad II bin 'Abdu'llah, Sultan of Morocco, etc. b. ca. 1709, second son of H.M. Sultan 'Abu Abbas Mulay 'Abdu'llah bin Ismail as-Samin, Sultan of Morocco, by a Shagara lady, educ. privately. Khalifa of Marrakesh 1750-1757. Proclaimed on the death of his father, 10th November 1757. Removed the capital to Marrakesh. He fortified the coastal towns and conquered Mazagan in 1769. Nevertheless, he interested himself in promoting trade and entered into treaty relations with a number of European powers aimed at suppressing the Barbary pirates. Casablanca port was renovated to handle modern vessels and Essaouira constructed with the help of a captured French architect. He also became the first foreign sovereign to extend recognition to the flag of the United States in 1777. m. several wives including (first) H.H. Lalla Fatima bint Sulaiman, Mulat ud-Dar, daughter of his paternal uncle, Mulay Sulaiman bin Ismail as-Samin. m. (second) Lalla Sargetta, an English or Irish lady. m. (third) a daughter of 'Abdu'llah Rahamani. m. (fourth) Lalla Zahra (d. at Marrakesh, 23rd May 1737, bur. there). m. (a) a Howariyya lady from Sais. m. (b) a lady of the Ahlaf tribe. m. (c) another lady of the Ahlaf tribe. m. (d) a lady from Rabat. m. (e) a third lady of the Ahlaf tribe. m. (f) a Beni Husain lady. m. (g) another European lady. He d. at Sale, near Rabat, 9th April 1790 (bur. there at the Tomb of Sidi Muhammad bin 'Abdu'llah), having had issue, twenty-one sons and several daughters, including:
